Hydra Blog Hop, Day 2: Amy McCorkle

Good Morning, Bloggerati:

For Day 2 of the "Hydra Blog Hop", author Amy McCorkle will be introducing us to her romance novel, Gladiator. If you like a bit of romance with a post-apocalyptic flavor, then you may want to tune in and get a taste of Ms. McCorkle's upcoming excerpt. Today, you can also find me featured on Jay Noel's Blog.

Gladiator

Ten years ago Tristan Shane had failed to pick sides and he paid with the ultimate price—his family.  Enslaved as a post-apocalyptic gladiator, he is now faced with a similar dilemma, serve the despot  Queen and murder her innocent sister, or face certain death himself. What will he choose?

Tristan Shane was a moderate before the nuclear and economic crisis which plunged the world into darkness. While his sister Aidia ran off to fight the rebel’s war he desperately tried to hang onto normalcy and lost his wife and children in the process. Spending the next ten years as the Crown’s favored and the mob’s favorite Gladiator, he never expects to meet the Queen’s sister, Alexandra, a Healer.

She claims to be the much whispered about Savior sent to heal the wounded Earth and oceans, the one who would bring about her cruel sister’s dethroning. But is she? Or is she just a fraud? But he quickly learns her erotic touch has the power to heal his heart and his to save her life. But as the passion heightens and the danger increases will they have forever or will he have to give up everything to save the planet?

 Excerpt: A Sneak Peek

“What is it you want, Veronica?”

She leaned in close and whispered seductively, “Why, you know I only want you, Tristan.”

He snatched her up by her throat, pinned her against the wall and kissed her passionately, brutally, and without clemency. When he pulled away she was smiling with a darkness that made him angry. She was a power-hungry mongrel who played on her husband’s weaknesses and jealousies. Tristan hated her. And he hated himself for f***ing her. But this was his life. He let go of her and walked away.

“Is my poor Gladiator jealous? There’s really no need for that, is there? You know you’re my favorite.”

“What is it you really want, Veronica?”

She came up behind him and seductively began to ease off his armor. He was covered in sweat and blood and he felt her shiver against his body. And as always there was a twinge of nausea that would precede the raw animal aggression.

She turned him around. He looked at her. There was no doubt about it; she was beautiful. But she was poisonous—a rattlesnake with crystal green eyes and flaming red hair. Her father had promised peace and a return to normalcy and democracy in the wake of economic and nuclear disaster, and instead this was what had become of the world. And she was no doubt always enjoining her father to maintain her life in this fashion. He loathed her. He detested her. And every time he had sex with her his intense hatred for himself deepened a little bit more.

“My dear, sweet Gladiator, as much as I’d like to celebrate your victory with you tonight, my husband wishes me to share his bed. But fear not—I do have a consolation prize for you.”

His skin began to crawl. Veronica had a twisted way of looking at what constituted a consolation prize; it was usually just a groupie who wanted to watch what the queen did with the equivalent of rock stars of the former United States of America. And he usually did the dog and pony show. But sometimes Veronica required something to prove his loyalty to her. That would be more complicated.

“What is it this time?”

She smiled. His response had given her the mistaken impression that he cared.

“The rebels have been restless. And it seems there is a young woman we have in our prison whom they want terribly. Well, frankly, they are in two minds as to what to believe. It is rumored she is the mythical Healer. The one meant to find her soul mate, so together they will lead our Nation out of the so-called darkness into which it has plunged itself.”

“And what do you want me to do?”

“Oh Tristan, why are you being so defensive? I just want you to find out whether she really is the Healer, and report to me if she is.”

“And then, what?”

“And then you let me handle it,” Veronica said, sliding back into the evil skin that was her natural state. “The rebels have no idea what it takes to run a country.”

The image of his wife being raped and murdered flooded him and it was all he could do not to throttle the queen right then and there.

“So can I count on you to do this for me or do I need to find someone else who can?”

He was no one’s hero. But she had said young woman. And he couldn’t just allow his wife’s fate to be visited upon some other unsuspecting girl. “I’ll do what I can.”

Veronica ran her index finger down his cheek and whispered, “Good boy, Tristan,” she purred.
“Guard! She’ll be delivered before the night is over. I don’t know when I’ll be able to return to you, but I expect that you’ll have had enough time to gain her trust by then.”

Tristan’s stomach churned. The Healer? In the beginning there had been whispers of it. But he had never believed in such a thing. It had been years since the crown had feared anything. And now this.
He said nothing as the queen was escorted away. He was left to think about the young woman he might be forced to turn over in the end.

Hydra Blog Hop, Day 1: Blaine Pardoe

Readers, wordsmiths, yoginis, jedi knights: Be welcome! (and anyone else, for that matter)

Today marks the beginning of the "Hydra Blog Hop". Not only will I be introducing a Hydra author each day this week, but I will also be featured on a fellow Hydra author's website for as long as the "Hop" runs (Sept. 10th-15th). Today's stop will be at Amy McCorkle's Blog. Tune in later this week when I feature her for part of the "Hop".

But enough of the formalities. Everyone: please give a warm welcome to Mr. Pardoe, author of Virginia Creeper~

Virginia Creeper – A Tour of Where I Live
by Blaine Pardoe
Virginia Creeper is a story of Virginia’s Piedmont region. It’s not a tale for the faint of heart – the events in the book are fairly frightening.  What adds to this is the setting, in this case, where I live.
Virginia’s Piedmont is nestled along the Blue Ridge mountain range.  It is a place where some families go back to the 1700’s.  George Washington surveyed the county I live in (Culpeper) for example.  It is a place where the yuppies of Northern Virginia nimbly collide with farming communities and the rolling hills of horse country.

The people – well, they can be colorful.  We have your off-the-shelf rednecks, respectable folk, young money, old money, and counties where you are known by your family name, the church you attend, or your role in the community.  As a people we tend to be more conservative than Northern Virginia.  Your family roots tell your story.  Comealongs (shirt-tail Yankees who have moved here) are treated differently than those that are born in Virginia.  I was born in Virginia but raised in Michigan and I am quick to point that out when I’m in a group of my fellow Virginians.  It changes the nature of our discussions and how I’m regarded.

The Civil War (or, The War of Northern Aggression as it is often referred to) is not just a tourist event, it took place in our yards, fields, and homes.   The Piedmont was settled before America became a nation and our Indian heritage is embedded in our rivers and roads.

The people of the Piedmont love NASCAR, guns, steeplechase, polo, God, state, and country – in an ever-changing order.  We can be a quirky bunch, but you will rarely live in an area where you have such friendly and loyal friends.

It is into this mix that Virginia Creeper is set.  These apparent contradictions are intertwined in my book.  The events described in the book happened here because of those contradictions.  This is a story of horror that could only happen in a place where the heritage goes back as far as some of our dark roots burrow.

A question I got the other day is, “are all of these places real?”  Yes.  If you want, you can find Indian Pulpit, if you are so brave and inclined.  Pignut Mountain is a very real, though I have obscured in the book the actual location of the death pit – for obvious reasons.  The burned out hulk of the Beverly Mill can still be seen from Route 66.  The Frost Diner and the other locations are all quite real.  This last year the movie J. Edgar was filled in front of the Fauquier County courthouse, that’s how out of place Warrenton Virginia can appear in the 21st century.  I invite you to go and seek out these places if you ever visit the area.  But, if you’ve read Creeper, be prepared to be scared.

So if you're interested in a fantasy read with a bit of romance, suspense, betrayal, and darkness (not to mention... elves) - all tied together with poetic, archaic language, then you will want to give Empyreal Fate a try. And if you are so kind as to read it, I am always appreciative of reviews.

What are you waiting for? The realm of Llathala awaits~

Filled to the brim with forbidden love, an ancient evil, and a nation in disrepair, Empyreal Fate is a tale of riveting bravery and mortal corruption.

The land of Llathala lingers on the brink of war between men and elves, a dark history surrounding each race. Stirred by tensions of the land, a shadow of the past reemerges, taking precedence in reality and consuming the very soul of mans’ mortal weakness. Darrion, the son of a poor laborer, is ensnared in a hostile world, forced to choose between loyalty to his king or the counsel of the elves. Yet Fate has other plans in store, tying his course to Amarya, an elven royalblood of mysterious quality and unsurpassable beauty. But this forbidden connection incites betrayal from members of their own kin, marking them as traitors to the crown. In a land torn asunder, only Fate’s decree can allow such love to coexist with an ancient enmity.

New Release: "Crown of Ash" by Steven Montano

Good Morning, Mates:

How is the world on this fine day? Though it's hardly begun, I can tell it is going to be a swell Monday indeed; I can taste it in the air. To begin, I am honored to introduce author Steven Montano to my blogsite. He writes dark, epic fantasy novels with a dystopian, military flavor. And, as his website attests, he incorporates real vampires in his work. Today, we are to be treated to an excerpt and a blurb of Mr. Montano's latest novel, Crown of Ash, which is Book #4 in his Blood Skies series. So, without further ado, fetch your favorite drink (preferably hot cocoa), flip on some tunes for effect (how about New Age?), and poise your attention to Mr. Montano's latest piece:

Crown of Ash Excerpt: The Winterlands

He looks out from the void.
He is nothing.  A ghost presence.  A phantom.
Trapped in a land of whispering voices.
He has been there for so very long.
The world is saturated in darkness.  It slithers down the trees like rain.
Years have passed since he first arrived in that dismal place.  His face is leathery and rough, and he wears a thick beard.  His hair is long and unkempt.  His skin has gone dark, saturated by the soot atmosphere.  His lips are dry and his eyes sting from the dark grit that constantly lashes the landscape.
Everything is black and cold.  The land, the trees, even the other inhabitants of that cloying realm are suffused with shadow.  It drips from every pore.
The sky is a frozen slate of perpetual dusk.  Light shines from just over the horizon and drenches everything in an eye-numbing glaze.  The freezing wind smells of rot.
He’s come to know this land of torn red mud and black ooze.  There are few cities, all of them in ruins.  He travels past briny pools of black water and dark trees with branches weighed down by deathly pale fruit.  He avoids reptiles that breathe caustic slime and carnivorous plants that fan and pulsate like living organs.  He circumvents blood swamps and fields of moldered bones.
He isn’t the only human in that dominion of shade.  He spies natives in the distance, primitive and murderous people who roam the land in small bands.  They ride on the backs of shaggy mammoth beasts with scorpion tails.
He sees phasing fliers, unstable bats the size of whales.  They soar low through the undine fog and howl at the ground as they search for prey.  Their riders are horned humanoids with staffs of dark fire and cloaks of mirrored scales.
He is a stranger there, a refugee.  He walks and walks and dreams of escape, but he has been there for so long he’s almost given up hope.  The shadow world has him, and it will never let him go.  He tries to remember the world he once belonged to.  It was a scarred world, damaged beyond measure, but it was his home.  He’d protected it from danger more times than he could remember.  Never before had he appreciated it as much as he does now.
The worst times for him are when he looks into the water.  He hugs himself tight in his cloak to shield his body against the freezing wind as he stands over clear p
ools of ice and salt.  There are only a few of those pools, derelict bodies of steaming cold liquid so utterly pale they are like liquid suns on the face of the ebon landscape.  They stare like white eyes up to the darkness of the sky.
When he stands near them he sees into the world he used to call home.  The visions are always random flashes that last just a few moments, but he finds himself staring into them more and more as the years go by.
